There’s no doubt that the cost of everything is continuing to rise, almost weekly, and everyone is feeling the strain. And it’s not just materials and labour, it’s everyday essentials that are using up the monthly budget, meaning renovation budgets are feeling the pinch now more than ever. With prices so high, home renovators are looking at ways they can still achieve their dream kitchen renovation but without having to compromise on style, design and quality.
I’m Looeeze Grossman, founder of The Used Kitchen Company, and here I’ll share my savvy renovation tips on how you can save thousands by using used or ex-display.
Non negotiables
Before you start spending, it is important to create a list of non-negotiables, the things you simply refuse to compromise on. This may not be the most expensive; they’re simply the things that your dream renovation couldn’t do without. From quartz worktops, a pantry cupboard or a Quooker tap, what are the things you want the most? From there, research prices and start assigning a budget. Next, research ways to close the gap between what you want and what you can afford.
Research
Bargain hunting has never been easier. With AI tools and online marketplaces to do the heavy research lifting, you’ll have a list of suggested bargain, ex-display or used stockists in seconds. The key is the way you research, be specific with your search terms, especially if there’s a certain make, design or colour you are after. Create a simple spreadsheet to track what you have found, their location and the price you’re looking to beat.
Embrace used and ex-display
This is where the biggest savings lie. There’s no doubt that renovating your kitchen is going to take up a huge chunk of your renovation budget. But, there are ways you can save thousands. Used and ex-display kitchens are not a compromise; they’re often actually an upgrade. Often delivering quality and finishes you never thought your budget would stretch to. Often used and ex-display styles come with built-in appliances, often from top brands including Miele, Gaggenau and Neff.
A used painted kitchen, for example, can give you huge flexibility, even if it’s not in the colour you’re looking for. Repainting is straightforward and relatively inexpensive, particularly if you do it yourself, and if that kitchen comes with the worktops, layout and appliances you are after, you’re most of the way there for a fraction of the price Ex-display kitchens offer huge flexibility as you’re often able to purchase additional units. This gives you huge flexibility, especially if the ex-display you’re looking at isn’t quite big enough or doesn’t feature the island you are after. The cost of expensive worktops and appliances can often outweigh the cost of the cabinets themselves; sourcing them used or ex-display can often be the largest saving of your entire project.
Sell what you have
Did you know you could sell your existing kitchen to help fund your new one? Many homeowners aren’t aware that selling a used kitchen can make hundreds or thousands of pounds towards the cost of their new one. Using a platform like ours means all the hard work is taken care of for you. Even if your kitchen isn’t in “specialist sale” condition, sites such as eBay or Facebook Marketplace will still give you an outlet to sell your old kitchen. Selling your old kitchen not only boosts your budget but also keeps it out of landfills.
Upcycle
Choosing not to buy new can mean upcycling what you have or updating what you can find. For example, sourcing used handles for your kitchen and spraying them the colour of your choice can save a surprising amount. Handles and knobs can be expensive, so it’s worth exploring on sale sites, boot sales or antique shops to see what’s available. Mixing and matching has also become super chic. Buying used or ex-display allows you to create a kitchen with personality and individuality. You can experiment with mix and match textures and finishes. Add in your own elements, like a vintage mirrored splashback to a more modern designed kitchen or add in antique lampshades for your pendants over your island. By exploring second hand or upcycled pieces will not only save you thousands, but it will also allow you to be fully flexible with what you achieve. You’re not tied to one brand; you can mix and match to secure the best deal and your perfect kitchen without compromise. It just takes a little research and creativity.
